Trip Reports

In this section of ON TRACK ON LINE, we present reports of trips on the rails. We hope you will enjoy reading about the adventures of others, and that they will tempt you to experience passenger rail travel too.

Two new trip reports have been posted recently.

In September 2011, Greg Hunter and his wife made a cross country trip from San Francisco to Boston, with some stops along the way. Greg shares their adventures here

In June 2011, Walter E. Zullig Jr. took a round about ride from Tacoma, WA. to Croton Harmon, NY. Walter ended up traveling one day longer than he had originally planned, thanks to flooding knocking out the Empire Builder. Read more about his trip here

In December 2010, James Coombs ventured over to Europe to take a spin on high speed service from Paris to Strasburg, France. You can follow his round trip on the HSR service here.

In August 2010, several OTOL members got together for our second time that summer for a much smaller and shorter fest in New York City. The majority of the riding was once again on commuter rails in the NYC area, with of course a bit of subway riding thrown in for good measure as always. Join us on our adventures here.

In July 2010, many OTOL members took part in the annual Summer OTOL Fest; traditionally our longest fest. This year saw people making their way to the Pacific Northwest via various trains. We took in the sights and trains of the three major cities; Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver. You can read about our rides as well as see over 40 pictures here.

  • In August & September, 1979 OTOL leader David Warner made a figure 8 trip across the US on Amtrak. David included 14 photos of his trip within his report. You can revist some Amtrak history by reading David's report here.

About 300 other trip reports are available also.

Amtrak Radio Frequencies

Amtrak trains use the radio frequencies of the Host Railroads over which Amtrak trains run. Our Amtrak Frequencies section lists the AAR channels and frequencies Amtrak uses on each of its routes, with specific data about each route segment.

Operation Lifesaver

Operation Lifesaver is a national, non-profit public education program dedicated to ending collisions, deaths and injuries at highway-rail grade crossings and along railroad rights-of-way. We encourage you to visit Operation Lifesaver's Web Site.

Danny Boehr/Al Tuner "Muse From Here" Archive

Our Danny Boehr/Al Tuner - The Muse From Here Archive section contains a comprehensive collection of Al Tuner's "Muse From Here" essays on railroading distributed by e-mail beginning in 1994

The family of the late Danny Boehr dedicated a bench to him at Horseshoe Curve in August, 2003. Danny was a dear friend and a significant influence in railfanning using the internet. The Danny Boehr/Al Tuner Dedication Page includes the text of speeches and photos of the ceremony.
